George Dewey (December 26, 1837 – January 16, 1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in United States history to have attained the rank. He is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side. Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont. Stickney graduated the U.S. Naval Academy in 1862, and rose to the rank of lieutenant before pursuing a career as a newspaper reporter. In 1898, Stickney reported for the Chicago Tribune from the bridge of Admiral George Dewey's flagship Olympia during the Battle of Manila Bay.
